Description

Thuja plicata 'Whipcord' The unusual foliage on this low, mop-head-like plant consists of long, thick, glossy tendrils that suggest Independence Day fireworks. Unlike the species, which is a giant forest tree, the many branches seem to explode upward and send sparks cascading in all directions. Green in summer, the foliage changes to bronze in winter, matching the richly colored wood. Every garden can accommodate the small, dynamic conifer (only about 5' tall and 4' wide) that demonstrates some deer resistance.  Found in a seedbed of Western Red Cedar at Drakes Crossing Nursery, Silverton, Oregon.

    It came in perfect shape 2 days ago with the rootball still moist and no branch damage. I planted it yesterday morning. I think it will be happy in its new, rather shady spot with NW natives around it!

    The plant was in perfect condition when it arrived. I wish the communication was increased with the nursery but the product was perfect.

    I was worried about shipping a living plant in June, but the plant came quickly and was in very good shape. It's planted in my garden and adjusting to its new home.
