Araucaria araucana Chilean Pine Monkey Puzzle Tree. Popular garden tree, used for the unusual effect of its thick scaled branches with very symmetrical appearance. It prefers temperate climates with abundant rainfall, tolerating temperatures down to about −4 °F. It is far and away the hardiest member of its genus. Great for a coastal plant as it takes to salt spray just fine.
The piñones are similar to pine nuts, but larger; these roasted seeds are edible and harvested by indigenous people in Argentina and Chile. Trees take 30-40 years to produce seeds and trees can live as long as 1000 years.
